Support is provided for up to 12 months but it is entirely up to you how quickly you work through the course. The estimated study time is 225 hours so if you average around 5-6 hours a week study you would complete in 9-10 months.

The course is delivered hard copy in folders (online access also available). These are yours to keep so you can write on them, make notes etc. Your pack will contain everything you need to begin your course including your lessons, tutor and support information. In addition a study guide explaining how to get started along with comprehensive study notes for each element of the course is included.

Support is provided throughout the course via a tutor who can be emailed at any time should you come across anything you are unsure of. There is also a support team by telephone. Don't hesitate to ask if you are unsure!

In addition you will have access to weekly group zoom meetings where students will have an opportunity to submit questions to a tutor and get the necessary support. Even if you haven't a question of your own, the questions and answers given to other students may prove invaluable to you.

The course is split into eleven units. At the end of each unit you will complete an assignment which you will email to your tutor. An assignment is a set of questions based upon the unit you have just studied. If there are any areas for improvements or anything that you have misunderstood you will always have the opportunity to re-submit. Alongside this you will be putting together a portfolio of evidence. Here you are documenting examples of tasks and activities you complete in the classroom. Your evidence sheets will be signed by the teacher you work alongside in the classroom.

The good news is there are no exams! Once you have completed all the assignments/portfolio work you complete the course.

Unit 1: Understand schools and colleges as organisations

In this unit students will cover:

• Know the different types of schools and colleges in the education sector
• Understand the organisation of schools and colleges in terms of roles and responsibilities
• Understand how schools and colleges uphold their aims and values.
• Know about the range and purpose of school and college policies and procedures.

Unit 2: Understand children and young people's development

In this unit students will learn:

• Understand significant stages of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years of age
• Understand the kinds of influences that affect children and young people’s development.
• Understand the potential effects of transitions on children and young people’s development
• Understand child protection procedures
• Know about current policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, including data protection

Unit 3: Safeguarding Children and Young People

In this unit students will cover:

• Legislative guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people including e-safety
• What to do when children or young people are ill or injured, including emergency procedures
• How to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused, harmed or bullied

Unit 4: Equality, diversion and inclusion in a learning environment for children

In this unit students will cover:

• The importance of promoting equality and diversity in working with children and young people
• The impact of prejudice and discrimination on children and young people
• The inclusion and inclusive practices in working with children and young people

Unit 5: Maintain relationships with children and young people

In this unit students will cover:

• Understand effective communication with children and young people.
• Understand positive relationships with children and young people
• Be able to build and maintain professional relationships with children and young people and others in a learning environment

Unit 6: Support the health and safety of children and young people

In this unit students will cover:

• Understand health and safety legislation in a learning environment
• Be able to contribute to health and safety in a learning environment.

Unit 7: Support positive behaviour in a learning environment for children and young people

In this unit students will cover:

• Understand policies and procedures for promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour in a learning environment.
• Be able to support positive behaviour.
• Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour

Unit 8: Contribute to teamwork in a learning environment

In this unit students will cover:

• Understand teamwork in a learning environment.
• Be able to contribute to teamwork.
• Be able to support the work of the team

Unit 9: Understand children and young people's play and leisure

In this unit students will cover:

• Understand the nature and importance of play and leisure.
• Understand own role in relation to play, leisure and extra-curricular activities

Unit 10: Promote an effective learning environment

In this unit students will cover:

• Be able to support the teacher in planning learning activities.
• Be able to support learning activities.
• Be able to monitor children and young people’s participation and progress.
• Be able to support the evaluation of learning activities.

Unit 11: Provide displays in a learning environment

In this unit students will cover:

• Be able to plan displays for a learning environment.
• Be able to display information.

This course provides successful students with a qualification from NCFE CACHE, regulated by Ofqual. NCFE CACHE is an Awarding Organisation recognised by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) in England and by the Welsh Government.

This is a competence based qualification suitable for all roles in school, including site staff, administrators etc as well as those who work directly with children and young people. It seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding that all those working in a school setting will need and covers areas such as safeguarding, communication and understanding the school context.
